Kyaiktiyo (the Golden Rock)
Along with Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Buddha of Mandalay, the golden rock of Kyaiktiyo is considered to be one of the main destinations of Buddhist pilgrimages.
The Golden Rock is a massive boulder set precariously on the edge of a precipice on the top of mount Kyaiktiyo. Tradition wants that the equilibrium of the boulder is maintained thanks to a hair of the Buddha placed within the stupa of the rock.
Mawlamyine (Moulmein)
Mawalamyine was the British capital of the country from 1827 to 1852.
It’s a city flanked on one side by an extensive hill range and the other side by the sea. Anciently the city used to be the main port for teak trading but nowadays Yangon has replaced the city in this role. Mawlamyine is a city where the British colonial architecture and lifestyle are still alive.
Mrauk-U
Founded in 1433 by king Mizawmum, Mrauk-U was the capital of one of the most important kingdoms of Burma. Its riches where such that it used to be compared with the great cities of the west. It is possible to visit the ruins of the royal palace and more than 70 temples.
Sittwe
Sittwe, located close to the border with Bangladesh, was born as an outpost founded more than 2000 years ago but it started to develop as a full fledged city only in 1824, during British colonial rule. Sites of interest include the Payagi temple, the Buddhist museum and the riverfront.
Putao
The northern heights of Putao are considered as some of the most uncontaminated of Asia. From here challenging trekking paths depart and allow adventuring visitors to admire the natural beauties of the region, among which we can count the Hkakabo Razi mountain (5889 meters high and covered with snow all year long).
Myitkyina
An ideal setting for trekking excursions, Myitkyina, the capital of the Kachin state resides in a valley surrounded by mountains. The local flora and fauna are the best ingredients to insure that the visit to the local villages is both pleasant and relaxing.
