Aftermath of Vietnam War

my lai memorial America spent nearly $165 billion on the war. 58,000 Americans died, and hundreds of thousands were wounded, some even permanently paralyzed. Over 2 million Vietnamese (north, south, civilians alike) died as a result of the war. They had to deal with a country in tatters, and an economy that had gone down the drain. Their land today is still scattered with unexploded bombs, land mines, and other dangers waiting to be stepped on. Their jungles and marshlands were destroyed by chemicals such as napalm and Agent Orange. Many of their historic buildings were destroyed, as well as the homes of millions.

When Vietnam War Veterans returned, many were greeted with only coldness. After the end of the war in 1975, America went back to it's every-day lifestyle, and the war was basically forgotten until 1982. On November 11 1982, the Vietnam War Memorial was built in honor of all the soldiers who died in the war. The 7 million dollars used to construct the wall came from private organizations and single donors.

The design was chosen through a contest in which you had to be 18 or older to enter. The 1421 designs were judged by 8 internationally known Artists/designers. 21 year-old student Maya Ying Lin of Ohio won the contest. The wall is 2 pieces that come to a point in a V-shape, one side points to the Lincoln memorial and the other points to the Washington Monument in Washington DC. The wall is 10.1 feet high at the Vertex and is made of polished black Granite from Banglor India. It is 246 feet and 9 inches long and has 58,209 names inscribed on it. Proceeding each name on the Wall, there is either a cross or a diamond. A cross means that the proceeding man was missing in action. A diamond means that they are confirmed dead.

A statue was also built in honor of the solders by Fredrick Hart. It is a sculpture of 3 American soldiers in battle uniform standing near a flag pole at the entrance to the wall. A memorial was also built in honor of the women who died in Vietnam. It was sculpted by Glenna Goodacre and depicts 3 women coming to the aid of a wounded soldier.

On July 2 1976, the communist party declared North and South Vietnam as Unified. From there, Vietnam's economy started a rapid downward plunge. Southerners resisted the Communist government's ownership of everything. Farmers found it difficult to grow food because of the torn up ground. Often plows would run over an unexploded bomb. Children out playing might accidentally stumble over left over war materials, and permanently injure themselves. Many of Vietnam's historical sights were destroyed by American Bombers. Entire Villages had been destroyed, and people had been moved from their homes. Vietnam was forced to rebuild its all aspects of its country, with hardly any money to pay for it. There are some monuments commemorating Vietnamese who died in the war

The Vietnam war, and all wars have terrible costs to both the winners and the losers. The country on whose land the war took place suffers damage to its ecosystem that takes decades to re-grow. People die, families are hurt, and no one is ever really happy about the effects of a war.
