George Ball
Senior state department official for Johnson argued against deepening American involvement in Vietnam.

MCGeorg Bundy
Head of national security counsel under Johnson. Urged Johnson to de-escalate war in 1968. One of the "Wise men."

William Bundy
Brother of MCGeorg, assistant secretary of state, helped formulate Vietnam policy.

Clark Clifford
Secretary of defense under Johnson. Steered Johnson away from escalation of the war.

A.Peter Dewey
The first American to die in the Vietnam War.

William Fulbright
Chairman of Foreign Relations Committee for Johnson, gave Johnson power to send forces in 64 but soon turned against the war.

Alexander Haig
National security counsel staff in 1969 took part in cease-fire talks in 1972.

Lyndon B Johnson
Entered the white house after Kennedy's assassination in 1963. Played a major part in the escalation of the war. After the passing of the Tonkin Gulf resolution, he had almost complete control over the armed forces, and could send troops and bomb Vietnam as much as he felt necessary.

Henry Kissinger
National security advisor in 1969, negotiated the Paris peace settlement in 1963.

Melvin Laird
Secretary of defense 1968-?. Favored troop withdrawal.

Robert McNamara
Secretary of defense from 1961 to 1968, SR policy maker for Vietnam War. Resigned in 1968 do to disenchantment with the war.

Archimedes Patti
Helped draft the Vietnamese declaration of independence in 1945.

Dean Rusk
Secretary of state from 1961 to 1968. From 1950 as assistant secretary of state he devoted more years to Vietnam than any other official. He argued consistently that "Aggression" had to be stopped.

Cyrus Vance
Deputary secretary of defense from 1964 to 1967.

William West Morland
Head of Military advisory mission to Vietnam from 1964 to 1968. Commander of US combat forces.

Earl Wheeler
Chairrman of Joint chiefs of staff from 1964 to 1970.

Vietnamese People:

Bui Diem
Ambassador to US from 1966 to 1972. Northerner at birth, fled to the south and Joined the South Vietnamese Government.

Bui Tin
Communist officer who took the surrender from Saigon in 1975.

Duong Van Minh
Led the coup against Diem in 1963.

Ho Chi Minh
Took this name himself which means "he who enlightens". Declared Vietnam's independence in France in 1945. President of North Vietnam from 1945 until his death in 1969. He was and still is considered a national hero.

Le Duc Tho
Negotiated with Henry Kissenger for the cease-fire agreement in 1973. He rejected the Nobel Peace prize.

Ngo Dinh Diem
Intense anticommunist nationalist who was murdered by his own generals in 1963. Leader of South Vietnamese government from 1955 until his death.

Ngo Dinh Nhu
Ngo Dinh Diem's broter. Responsible for many politically questionable assisinations and other acts. He and wife also served as advisers to Diem. He, too was murdered in 1963.

Nguyen Cao Ky
Prime minister of South Vietnam from 1965 to 1967. Fled to California and opened a liquor store in 1975.

Nguyen Van Thieu
President of south Vietnam from 1967 to 1973. He was indecisive and distrustful.

Tran Do
Deputy commander for South Vietnam, instrumental in the 1968 Tet offensive.

Tran Van Tra
Deputy commander for South Vietnam, directed the attack against Saigon in the 1968 Tet offensive.

Van Tien Dung
Directed the offensive against Saigon in 1975, Defense minister of Reunified Vietnam.

Vo Nguyen Giap
Chief communist strategist.
