The Beginning of Vietnam War

Ngo Dinh Diem was appointed prime minister, with Bao Dai as president as a result of the Geneva accords. Vietnam was split along the 17th parallel into 2 countries: North and South Vietnam. During the separation, 860 thousand fled to South Vietnam from the north and 50 thousand from south to north.

The North Vietnamese government actually liked this change because it meant providing less food for the people. Diem rigged the election so he could win, and became president of South Vietnam. He was not popular with the people, But the US agreed with Diem's policies and supported him because he was against communism. They helped him rig the election and sent spies to raise decent in the North.

The South Vietnamese really hated Diem. He acted more like an emperor than a president. Diem abused his power by sending people to kill his enemies and sending others to prison. The scheduled election in 1956 was canceled because Diem thought that the South Vietnamese were influenced by the communist party. After this, the US decided to stop supporting Diem. They no longer agreed with his policies. He forced peasants away from their villages and on may 8th, 1963 stormed Buddhist temples arresting monks and nuns. To protest this, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk burned himself alive in the streets of Vietnam. Many other people protested this, but in different ways. The Government of North Vietnam wanted to normalize relations, and work peaceful toward a united Vietnam, but their proposal was refused.

Finally, the south Vietnamese could take it no longer. Diem was assassinated on May 1st 1963. He was killed by the South Vietnamese army. All of South Vietnam celebrated. This helped the North decide that it was time to take action to reunite the country.
