Dinh Dynasty

The most powerful of the twelve feudal lords, Dinh Bo Linh, reunified the fragmented country under the name of Dai Co Viet and took the imperial title of Dinh Tien Hoang De (The First August Emperor Dinh). Well aware of the Chinese Song Dynasty's military might, Dinh Bo Linh negotiated a non-aggression treaty in exchange for tributes payable to the Chinese every three years. This set the foundation of future relations with China that were to last for centuries.

On a domestic front, Dinh Tien Hoang established a royal court and a hierarchy of civil and military servants. A rigorous justice system was instated, and death penalties were used as a deterrent to all who threatened the new order in the kingdom. He organised a regular army divided into ten dao, or military corps. Security and order progressively re-established, inaugurating a new era of thai binh(peace). The economy was based on agriculture but handicrafts were also encouraged. Many working sites opened in Hoa Lu for weapon making, weaving, minting, ship-building et cetera. Many palaces and pagodas were constructed in that time. The basic unit of Dinh society was village, in which the land was common property that peasants could rent. They paid tax and was responsible to fulfil their duties toward the King. Education was not developed. Most of the literate persons were Buddhist monks and they were the advisors for the court and the common people.

However, Tien Hoang's reign was not to last long. He was assassinated in 979 by a palace guard. His younger son, Dinh Toan, succeeded the throne at a tender age of six.
