Myanmar Traditional Musics

Ancestors of Myanmar called Prome Dynasty entered Southern parts of Ayeyarwady River from the upper parts of Chinese Rawsuko River over thousands years ago. Myanmar ancestors were said to be Mongolian. This Dynasty came to ruin in about 1 century AD.

Myanmar ancestors were said to be Mongolian. This Dynasty came to ruin in about 1 century AD. It was said Prome Dynasty was an excellent country influenced by culture of ancient India.

Music is also influenced by that of China and India. Another things are that a Myanmar king attacked and captured Ayuddaya, Thailand. And the culture of Thailand came into Myanmar. Thai music contains as parts of Myanmar music. Then the country became a colony of British Empire in 19 century.

To consider the facts about Myanmar music, it is mixed with from some countries. To study music, there are so many unclear facts about Myanmar music. Myanmar music has separate musical instrument and tunes. Although the technology is not much developed, there was a history of each instrument, which was handed down by words.

There is a lot of musical instrument of many ethnic groups originally made by them. It is strange to find that there is a system of music and tune in several regions in Myanmar.
The outstanding character of Myanmar traditional music that there was the step-by-step history of Myanmar music. To have distinguish facts about Myanmar music, it needs to be introduced in various aspects.

Others are Maung (gong), Kyey Se (triangular gong), Swei Lei (little bells), Chu (jingle) Se, Wa Maung (gong), Teta Maung (gong), Kaung Laung, Tangyaung, Kyaw etc.

 

2. Kyo instruments are

Saung(harp)

Others are Mi Gaung (three stringed musical instrument in the shape of a crocodile), Aung (kind of medieval stringed instrument), Tayaw and etc.

 

3. Thaye instruments are

Oozi

Dobat

 

Byaw
(drum played with striker)


Saing (circle of various drums), Bongyi (big drum), Bontoe(short drum),Bonshe(long drum), Sitoe(short drum shape like a barrel), Sa Khunt(a kind of drum) and etc.

 

4. Lei instruments are

Hne

Palwei

 

KhayuThin(conch shell)


Others are Kato, Khayar and etc.

 

5. Let Khoke instruments are

Wa letkhoke

Ton wa
(Wooden gong or bamboo for timing and bamboo clappers)

 

6. Patala instruments are

Wa Patala (Wood Xylophone)
